Intern @The Ukrainian Museum

View department →

New York, NY, US

For the past several summers, I have been an intern at The Ukrainian Museum, where I have engaged deeply with Ukrainian visual and performing arts through research, curation, and community outreach. Each summer, I conduct in-depth research on prominent Ukrainian artists, including celebrated folk painter Maria Pryachenko, whose vibrant works I helped curate for exhibitions aimed at showcasing the richness of Ukrainian folk traditions and contemporary art. In addition to Pryachenko, I have contributed to projects highlighting artists such as Sonia Delaunay and other modern Ukrainian creatives, assisting with artwork selection, cataloging, and the development of exhibition narratives.Beyond curation, I have supported educational programming, helped prepare exhibition materials, and worked on promoting accessibility by creating interpretive content that broadens public understanding of Ukrainian culture. I have also assisted with organizing special events, artist talks, and guided tours, all designed to engage diverse audiences and foster community connections. This ongoing internship has provided me with a comprehensive perspective on museum operations, art history research, exhibition design, and cultural advocacy, all while deepening my passion for Ukrainian art and heritage.

ABOUT NICOLE LERMAN

As a graduate of the Professional Performing Arts School with a concentration in drama, I gained more than performance skills—I learned to listen deeply, read emotion, and connect with others on a personal level. Theatre taught me that every individual carries a unique story, and that attentive presence is essential to understanding those stories. These lessons guide my commitment to medicine, where empathy and communication are inseparable from care.As a proud Ukrainian woman, the war profoundly shaped my understanding of suffering and resilience. Hearing daily updates from family abroad, I saw how health, safety, and dignity could be threatened overnight. Witnessing hospitals overwhelmed and communities fractured deepened my desire to support others in meaningful, human-centered ways. The conflict showed me that medicine is not only science—it is protection, hope, and continuity. To contribute, I joined FARMERHOOD, a nonprofit aiding Ukrainian farmers whose land and livelihoods were destroyed. Through donor outreach, application review, and communication, I learned how organized, careful systems can help families rebuild. The farmers’ stories taught me that healing is holistic; restoring purpose and stability is as vital as physical recovery. At home, I founded Act Up for Equality, offering free acting classes and audition preparation to underserved youth. Many students arrived hesitant, unsure of their voices. Through mentorship, I saw confidence grow when they felt heard and supported. This affirmed my belief that personalized attention and accessibility are powerful tools for empowerment—values central to patient-centered care. This fall, I will begin studying Biochemistry at Vassar College on the pre-medical track. I hope to explore the intersection of science, community health, and the lived experiences that shape well-being. My background in theatre, service, and advocacy has taught me that medicine begins with listening. I am committed to becoming a physician who honors each patient’s story, meets them with compassion, and works to expand equitable access to care.
