Collaborating with Dr. Gracie-Ann Dinkins, a general surgeon, on a cross-sectional study titled “Colorectal Cancer Screening in First-Degree Relatives of Colorectal Cancer Patients in South Los Angeles.”Investigating the knowledge gaps and barriers to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening among first-degree relatives (FDR) of CRC patients in South Los Angeles, with a focus on socioeconomic influences; Conducting surveys to assess adherence to CRC screening guidelinesRecruiting CRC patients from MLK Outpatient Clinics and coordinating the participation of 100 first-degree relatives to gatherdata on screening practices; Analyzing disparities in CRC screening rates among minority populations, particularly Latino and African American communities, and identifying barriers to endoscopy access in a predominantly underserved patientpopulation.

ABOUT NICOLAS HURTADO BAUTISTA
I proudly identify as Afro-Latino, hailing from Bogota, Colombia, and raised in Anaheim, California. Growing up with my single mother and grandparents, I learned the importance of education and its ability to transform lives. This foundational belief fueled his determination to pursue higher education, leading me to UCLA, where I graduated in 2020 with a major in Biology and a minor in Chicana & Chicano Studies. To further prepare for medical school, I completed a postbaccalaureate program at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.My passion for medicine is driven by my commitment to addressing health disparities, practicing cultural empathy, and providing vital resources to uplift marginalized communities. Currently, as a medical student at Charles R. Drew University, I am on a dedicated path to becoming a physician who positively impacts individuals and communities alike. My ultimate goal is to inspire future generations of underrepresented students, showing them that they, too, can break barriers and make a significant difference in medicine.
