ABOUT NICOLA INNES

My research interests are driven by a desire to improve patient care and make the most efficient and ethical use of resources. They have been mainly focussed on clinical trials and offshoots of these. My nursing and dentistry background have given me a very patient-focussed outlook but I base my patient care, research and teaching on science, and focus on how oral health care could be improved for patients. specific areas I work in are:• development of the scientific evidence on which to base oral health care, especially for the clinical management of dental caries (my main area of interest here is in “sealing-in” caries – what happens in terms of clinical and other outcomes?) and uptake of evidence by practitioners• patient (especially children’s) perceptions of the dental care we provide and the related area of holistic or patient/child friendly dentistry • relative effectiveness of different methods of managing child dental caries• some of the wider aspects of dentistry in society and the interface with medicine/nursing/education• getting research used in practice for the benefit of the pubicThese research areas underpin my undergraduate and postgraduate teaching commitments in children’s dentistry, cariology and evidence based practice.
