About Nick Sweeting

I\'m a top-down learner, generalist problem-solver, and full-stack software engineer.I love doing the odd jobs many other devs don\'t like: keeping other people\'s code running, writing documentation, disentangling inherited spaghetti codebases, hiring + process improvement, and marketing/growth.I started out with sysadmin and networking work for local IT companies/startups in Shanghai, then moved on to full-stack web and security work in the US, and then eventually started a company of my own (Monadical.com) in Montreal. I\'ve been coding for 15 years,~11 of them professionally (2012 ~ present) Django, FastAPI, React, Next.js, Python, JS/Typescript, Bash, Linux/macOS/BSD sysadmin, DB admin for PostgreSQL/SQLite/MariaDB/etc, devops with Docker/Kubernetes/Consul/Ansible/Terraform/etc, data pipeline and sync engineering, internet archiving, distributed systems, security research, and more. Cities worked in: NYC (1yr), Shanghai (1yr), Portland (1yr), Montreal (5yr), Medellin (1yr), SF Bay Area (3yr+). I love cities with good public transit + bike lanes, diverse populations, and cooler weather. Industries worked for: Consulting: real estate, finance, gaming, neuroscience, crypto, nonprofits/academia, and more Full-time: healthcare, aviation+agriculture, logistics, devops/tooling, music, and more I like supercolliding groups of curious, diverse, motivated people and figuring out how to build resilient systems around good incentive structures. I spend a lot of my spare time on hardware projects in my garage, and Internet Archiving to fight censorship and link rot- Systems talk about power grids: https://youtu.be/x8T7UE7A0jk - Hardware projects: https://blog.sweeting.me/#-Hardware - Internet archiving project: https://ArchiveBox.io I look for communities that foster knowledge-osmosis through peers, like the Recurse Center and Interact. ⌘ https://recurse.com https://joininteract.com I also enjoy self-directed learning, particularly in neuroscience, physics, and hardware/fabrication. Using online courses, books, friends, YouTube, and practice I\'ve put 400hr ~ into of dirt/adv/road motorbiking in 8yr 5 continents 3x podium finisher https://docs.monadical.com/s/motorbikes You can find more of my projects, writing, talks, etc. on: WARNING: I don\'t check LinkedIn messages often (too much spam), if you want a reply, please contact me via Twitter DM or my website instead!
