About Nicki Stewart
Nicki Stewart is a textile artist, educator, and curator. Her work explores themes around gender, ancestry, social structures, and environment. Nicki uses repurposed garments and textiles as canvases to embroider stories of connection, shared experiences, and trauma, inviting viewers to engage with them in meaningful ways.Sustainability and regeneration are central to her storytelling. She believes in the mental and environmental benefits of mending and the value of reviving and reusing materials in a more circular approach to living, wearing, and experiencing art. By expanding on stories of women’s history, incarceration, and mental health, she hopes to establish a deeper connection to shared experiences in her work.Nicki is the founder and creator of a small business called Knomad Tiger.
Experience
Business Owner
Nov 2021 — Present · Taos, NM, US
I am an interdisiplinary artrepreneur, both a experimental artist focused on textiles and small business entrepreneur.I believe in the healthy mindfulness that comes with upcycling and its value in reviving and reusing materials with the purpose of a more circular approach to living, wearing and experiencing art. Using needle and thread, block stamping and natural dying to compose my work I repurpose, recreate and upcycle primarily from secondhand clothes, end of mill fabrics, and donations.Knomad Tiger was created as a place to explore and expand my work around upcycled apparel and art as well as a place to invite others to learn and share art knowledge through hands-on workshops.I graduated from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Santa Clarita, CA and now live in Taos, New Mexico. I spent 17 years in the film and television industry before starting my own brand and setting up my art studio.
