About Nick Anderson

My new job is a wonderful pivot. After many years of writing about education, now I\'m fighting for it.Why do we fight? Because higher education builds America. ACE is a leading and trusted voice on behalf of higher education. We represent colleges and universities of all kinds, public and private, throughout the country. We want the broadest possible access to education. We stand for innovation in teaching, learning and research. And we want policymakers and the public to understand the incredible strength of our institutions in the global education market. I came to ACE in 2024 after a run of almost 19 years at The Washington Post. As higher education writer, I covered thousands of schools across the country, paying particular attention to the students and faculty from around the world who bring them to life. My job was to unearth and analyze the trends shaping higher education in a time of enormous demographic, cultural and political change. To do that, I found essential data, history, characters and quotes. I used all that information to explore the college admissions maze, the politics of higher education, the inequities of educational opportunity and the evolution of learning and research in the 21st century. I started at The Post in 2005, reporting on local and regional education news from Prince George\'s County, Md. I became an editor in 2006 and spent the next six years in various roles, including assistant Virginia editor, deputy education editor and education editor. I oversaw a dynamic and award-winning staff that covered education issues from pre-kindergarten through college. In 2007, I helped edit The Post\'s team coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings that won a Pulitzer Prize. My work led me to frequent conversations with university presidents, lawmakers and Cabinet secretaries. In 2009 I interviewed President Obama in the Oval Office about education reform. As a writer and an editor, I sought to elevate ideas, hold leaders accountable and explain to the world why education matters and how it works (and sometimes doesn\'t work). Before coming to the Post, I spent eight years covering Congress, politics and education for the Los Angeles Times. I previously worked for the Associated Press, the San Jose Mercury News and the Palo Alto Weekly. I live in Montgomery County, Md.
