About Nick Thieme

I\'m a data scientist at Aperio Global, where I provide AI, ML, and statistical expertise for government clients. Priot to Aperio, I worked at The Baltimore Banner where I designed statistical experiments and analyzed data to discover and improve stories about inequality, human rights, health care, and climate change. While there, I won a Pulitzer prize for my coverage of the Baltimore overdose crisis, along with my colleagues Alissa Zhu and Jess Gallagher. I also designed and taught Frontiers of Computational Journalism to M.S. students in Columbia University\'s Dual M.S. in Journalism and Computer Science. I\'ve worked as a data journalist, data scientist, and statistician for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, New America, NASA, Comcast, the NSF, and a variety of universities, and my writing has appeared in Slate Magazine, BuzzFeed News, Significance Magazine, Quanta Magainze, and Undark Magazine. My work in the recent past includes: • A year-long investigation into the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the financial health of Georgians and Georgia\'s local governments, funded by grants from the Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University and the Pulitzer Center. • Developing statistical methodology and elder care ratings for an AJC elder care investigation that resulted in the GA House passing laws reforming elder care in Georgia. • Designing Jupyter notebook tutorials on using R to work with tricky data; organizing training workshop to help journalists, advocates, and policymakers in the learning tools usage. •Evaluating Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services data to understand the patent gaming by pharmaceutical companies I specialize in developing and applying robust statistical methodologies to data and problems with social relevance, and communicating the results of my analysis to a variety of audiences.
