About Nicholas Bergson-Shilcock

I believe people learn best when they have the freedom to follow their curiosity, and the right time, space, and community to do so.Since 2011, I\'ve seen thousands of programmers (from staff engineers and CTOs to new grads and everything in between) take time away from normal work to do programming retreats. Through that, I\'ve learned what really helps people grow and become better programmers: sustained focus, intellectual autonomy, and being surrounded by other curious, kind, ambitious, and generous people.I’m the cofounder and CEO of the Recurse Center, a self-directed programming retreat based in New York City where programmers come to learn, build, and reconnect with the joy of programming. People work on their own projects, pair with others, and follow their curiosity wherever it leads. Our business model is recruiting. There\'s no expectation or requirement for people to take new jobs after RC (lots of folks come while on sabbatical from their current gigs, or on garden leave, or before starting their own companies), but for people who do want new programming jobs (either right after their retreat or years down the line), we provide personalized recruiting services. We primarily recruit for tech and finance firms. If you’re someone who enjoys programming and cares about becoming a better programmer, you\'d probably enjoy RC. And if you care about programming, learning, and/or tech hiring, you\'ll hopefully enjoy my posts here.
