About Nicholas Marangi

I have over 5 years of experience working in Data Engineering and Data Science. Currently, I work as a Data Engineer within Avalara\'s Data Platform team where I construct pipelines, which pull data from source systems and send them into the enterprise data warehouse. One of my passions is to enable others, to bring data into our ecosystem so that they could deliver insights, train models, and develop visualizations. I\'ve allowed business units to finally be able to state how many customers they have, how many people they employ, and where they should look next for the next opportunity. I accomplished all of this by establishing the infrastructure that would enable our hundreds of pipelines to function, setting up the pipelines themselves to onboard thousands of tables to the enterprise data warehouse, and modeling the data as needed.Why choose to be a data engineer? Previously, I worked as an analyst downstream of my current team; I started by finding some data quality errors and increasingly found myself moving in that direction. Now I\'ve built half of the system and have broken (and fixed) the other half.Moving to Seattle for the MSIM program during the pandemic in 2020 was one of those risky opportunities that I remember years later. About a year after starting the program, I found employment as a research assistant, the goal being to build a recommendation system that would provide teachers with quality lesson plans and educational materials. It was during this time that I realized that the aforementioned gamble had paid off as I was using big-data analytical tools to transform and feed said data into dozens of machine learning models. Outside of work, I focus on physical health - primarily looking at running, biking, rowing, and scuba diving. I also have a specific addiction to programming textbooks and have a tendency to go through one every two months or so.I also like meeting new people over a cup of coffee.
