ABOUT NIAZ MORSHED FAYSAL
Greetings, I\'m Niaz Morshed, currently pursuing a graduate degree in mechanical engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. I specialize in material characterization, focusing on microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) and biofouling on advanced material surfaces. My work bridges microbiology and materials science, specifically examining the interactions between bacterial biofilms and technologically relevant materials such as copper, silicon, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), graphene, and polycrystalline diamonds. My current research explores the behavior of Citrobacter freundii (strain ATCC 8090) in aerobic conditions, including media preparation, culture development, and biofilm formation on multilayered material surfaces. I investigate how these biofilms contribute to MIC—a critical issue in freshwater and marine industries—by accelerating structural deterioration, increasing drag, reducing efficiency, and compromising material integrity. In pursuit of sustainable solutions, I am developing MIC-resistant coatings derived from bacterial biofilm matrices applied to patterned 2D surfaces. By studying the preferential growth and surface interactions of C. freundii on 2D materials like graphene and hBN, supported on copper substrates, I aim to contribute to environmentally responsible anti-biofouling strategies.I employ a comprehensive suite of analytical techniques to study surface chemistry and corrosion processes, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Raman Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Electrochemical Testing (Gamry).
