About Nicholas Pavlopoulos

Experienced project manager, mentor, and researcher in applied energy conversion and energy storage systems, with 14 years of technical experience and 7 years experience as a team leader. I\'m driven by a keen interest in structure-property and processing relationships of material systems and carrying these efforts through to advanced prototyping to create game-changing impact in my focus areas. My interests span from high throughput synthesis, design, and characterization of new electro/photo-catalyst systems to advanced prototyping of batteries for high-rate, long cycle life, and niche applications (lithium sulfur, flexible batteries, etc.), to the development of multifunctional polymer-particle systems for wearable and structural applications. As an experienced project manager, I have trained over two dozen researchers in my career across academic and industry settings, secured and managed project budgets in excess of $10M, and have led teams of up to 25 members in fundamental and applied efforts. My model of operation is to lead by example, and as such, I strive to pursue excellence in all aspects of project management and execution.

Experience

  1. Principal Investigator Project Manager

    Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Jan 2021 — Present · Laurel, MD, US

As a project manager/principal investigator at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics lab, I manage multidisciplinary efforts focused on advanced prototyping and scaling of safe and flexible batteries (wearables), development of novel tools for high throughput synthesis and characterization of catalytic systems, development of sensors for human performance monitoring, and a variety of fieldable coatings/composites for application specific needs. I seek to leverage the institution\'s exception expertise to make an impact in key need areas for the nation and world by fostering creative ideation and incorporating stakeholders from across various fields (e.g. materials chemistry, electrochemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, microsystems design, and optical physics). In this process, I have managed teams ranging from 3 members up to 25 members at a time to develop new energy conversion, energy storage, and multifunctional materials technologies.
