ABOUT NESREEN NABIL HUSSEIN

Dr Nesreen Hussein is an interdisciplinary theatre and performance scholar, educator, and maker. Her work is grounded on the intersections of performance, politics, and activism, and how these inform, and are informed by, understandings of identity, agency and belonging. Her research, writing, and pedagogy engage with epistemologies and histories of the Global South, drawing on post-colonial and decolonial praxes. She is concerned with examining the implications of colonial histories and the legacy of empire through critically exploring forms of performance and artistic practice, especially when negotiated as modes of resistance. Nesreen’s scholarship appears in various journals and edited volumes, including Contemporary Theatre Review, Theatre, Dance and Performance Training, Theatre Research International, Global Performance Studies, and Contention: The Multidisciplinary Journal of Social Protest. She is Co-Editor of Global Performance Studies Journal, and Associate Editor of Performance Research Journal. Nesreen\'s scholarship was recognised by receiving the Helsinki Prize and the New Scholars Prize from the International Federation for Theatre Research in 2011. In 2024, she received the Theatre and Performance Research Association’s Edited Collection Award for the special double issue she edited, “Decolonisation and Performance Studies,” Global Performance Studies, 5.1-2, 2022.As an artist with background in performance, visual arts, and design, she worked internationally with a number of theatre companies, directors and design studios, including Improbable, Vanio Papadelli, and Richard Gough, amongst others.
