ABOUT NEIL THURSTON
Technical Director with over 25 years consultancy experience in digital solutions, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), data visualisation and analytics, desktop and web application development, cloud computing, open source and commercial GIS and analytics software, database design and implementation, climate change, environmental hazard/risk assessment and remote sensing. Neil is an experienced project manager, director and/or technical lead of major digital and GIS studies in the UK. Examples include the delivery of updated Groundwater Vulnerability and historical land use datasets for England and Wales; strategic noise mapping of Northern Ireland; assessment of flood risk for UK government and the UK insurance industry; and the technical lead for the development of the Environment Agency’s national Water Resources GIS (WRGIS) system. Neil also led the development of ESRI GIS systems for Horizon Nuclear Power; creation of an online ESRI Enterprise Portal GIS system to support the expansion of Heathrow Airport; and GIS systems to aid the development of new electricity overhead line schemes. Neil experience also includes designing and implementation of ESRI GIS systems for Horizon Nuclear Power; undertaking a GIS scoping review for Sizewell C (EDF) and providing GIS consultancy services for Sellafield Plc.Neil has also managed or been the technical lead for a variety of international digital, GIS and remote sensing assessment studies. These include: creation of the Caribbean regional environmental data monitoring and data analysis portal (REMDAP) for OECS; development of GIS capabilities for the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) in Grenada; creation of an online ESRI mapping portal to assess risks posed to strategic road transport arising from natural hazards and future climate change in the Western Balkans (for the World Bank) and Ukraine (for the EBRD); windfarm, solar assessment and environmental survey projects for NEOM in Saudi Arabia; development of GIS capabilities and tools for the Government of the British Virgin Islands; GIS and remote sensing of environmental constraints to inform the national groundwater strategy in Qatar (for KAHRAMAA, national electricity and water supply agency); development of GIS strategy and implementation for rural transport development in the Philippines; and remote sensing services to support oil and gas exploration studies in Congo and Kenya.
