GARDENS BY THE BAY 20••••12 The 50-hectar tropical gardens at Marina South is home to some of the site’s most spectacular structures, including a 20 km2 grove of ‘Supertrees’ reaching almost 40 meters in height and two Cooled Conservatories. The project was won in an international design competition as part of a team led by landscape architects Grant Associates and was awarded World Building of the Year at the 2012 World Architecture Festival. The project was also awarded a IStructE Singapore Award 2012 as well as the Singapore Structural Steel Society Award 2012.U2 360 WORLD TOUR 2009 Touring stage set for U2’s 360 Tour. TURIN OLYMPICS, OPENING CEREMONY 2006 Opening Ceremony for the Winter Olympics with Mark FisherFEDERATION SQUARE MELBOURNE 19••••04 Cultural Centre in Melbourne, Victoria. Developing a completely new concept in façade systems utilizing a mathematical generator know as the ‘Penrose’ pinwheel. The scheme won the Australian Engineering Excellence Award.WHITE CUBE HOXTON SQ LONDON 2003 High spec extension (900m2) on top of an existing art gallery, constructed from pre-fabricated glazed modules installed over a one week period. NATIONAL GALLERY, LJUBLJANA SLOVENIA 2002 Glazed structure provides an entrance and gallery between two existing galleries. SINGAPORE ART CENTRE 1995–2001 Structural design of 130m long theatre shells including form development and analysis of shading and cladding system along with DP Architects of Singapore. The scheme won the Singapore Architecture- & RIBA Worldwide Awards.TARATANTARA, BALTIC Engineering of 50m long tensile membrane sculpture by Anish Kapoor. U2 TOURING STAGE SET (1998): Engineering of Touring Stage Set.HOUSE BY RACHEL WHITEREAD 1993 A collaboration with the artist, creating a concrete cast from a Victorian terrace. The piece won the 1993 Turner Prize.

ABOUT NEIL THOMAS

Neil Thomas is the Director and Founder of Atelier One, which has been described as ‘the most innovative engineering practice in the UK’. This innovation covers high-level research and implementation for materials in an enormous scale and variety of projects, often providing specialist advice to larger consulting practices. On behalf of Atelier One and as part of a team consisting of Grant Associates, Wilkinson Eyre & Atelier Ten,Neil received the World Building of the Year Award 2012 at the World Architecture Festival - for Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. Collaborations with Architects, Artists, and Designers have resulted in many interesting built projects such as Gardens by the Bay, London 2012 & Sochi 2014 Olympics Opening Ceremonies, Cloud Gate with Anish Kapoor and ‘The Claw’ Stage for U2’s 360 Degree World Tour, with Mark Fisher. Neil holds a number of high profile posts in the UK & US educational service, most recently being a Visiting Professor to Yale and MIT, and has co-written a book titled ‘Liquid Threshold’ which gives insight to the complex challenges of a number of extraordinary projects. Most recently Neil has been appointed by Leeds University as a member of a Steering Group to develop a new Architectural Engineering course. In 2014 Neil was elected Royal Designer for Industry for excellence and innovation in structural design and for sustained ingenuity as a structural engineer in collaborations to create ground-breaking public art. Later in the same year Neil received an Honorary RIBA Fellowship for both the excellence and the inventiveness of his contribution to Architecture over the past 25 years. In 2015 Neil was awarded Fellow of the Institute of Structural Engineers and most recently in 2016 honoured with an MBE on the Queen’s 90th Birthday for contributions to Architecture, Design and Engineering.
