As the founding director of Dickinson College’s Center for Sustainability Education, I collaborate with diverse campus stakeholders to create and achieve a shared vision for integrating sustainability learning throughout the college’s liberal arts curriculum, co-curricular programs, student life, and civic engagement. Our vision emphasizes experiential learning and seeks to advance interdependent goals for environmental health, social justice, economic access, and human wellbeing. Accomplishments, all of which were achieved with strong on- and off-campus partners, include developing highly effective faculty development programs; integrating sustainability into new and existing courses offered by more than 30 of Dickinson’s 44 academic programs; creating living laboratory programs that engage several hundred students each year; offering rich and varied co-curricular programs that bring sustainability scholars, practitioners and activists to campus; and engaging students and faculty in community-based research that advances sustainability goals on campus and in Carlisle, Cumberland County and other communities. These accomplishments have earned consistent recognitions of Dickinson as one of the top colleges in the nation for sustainability learning and performance from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, the Princeton Review and other organizations.
