ABOUT NEHAL KHAMIS
Dr. Nehal Khamis is an internationally recognized medical and surgical educator, and entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in health professions education. She is Adjunct Professor of Health Professions Education & AI Applications in the MEHP Program at Johns Hopkins University, where she co-leads the Curriculum Development course and leads AI integration into program design, faculty development, and educational research.She is the Founder and CEO of Smart MedEd Solutions (SMES) LLC, a U.S-based consulting and professional development company serving HPE faculty and institutions globally. Her simulation expertise includes co-authoring the widely adopted Stepwise Simulation Course Design Model (Surgical Endoscopy), leading the development of the ACS Online Tool for Simulation-Based Courses’ Design, and serving as Chair of the ACS-AEI Faculty Development Committee. She also served as an ACS Simulation Accreditation Surveyor, with site visits completed in the UK and UAE.Dr. Khamis has contributed to curriculum and assessment reforms nationally and globally, advised EMRO/WHO on national accreditation systems, and led EPA-based curriculum design, simulation, assessment, and faculty development initiatives across academic, professional, and regulatory bodies.Her recent work focuses on innovative and responsible AI integration in HPE. She is co-developer of a GenAI-assisted stepwise program evaluation model with Prof. David Kern, creator of the AI Competency Framework for Health Professions Educators, and designer of the BUILDS Framework for developing AI agents and customized GPTs that address educators’ technical and administrative challenges.Her work has been recognized by the JHU Provost DELTA Award (2023) and the IAMSE Outstanding Reviewer Award (2024). She has delivered numerous Grand Rounds, keynote talks, and workshops worldwide.
