View department →

Los Angeles, CA, US

Through Loyola\'s Center for Service & Justice, there is a robust offering of service-immersion opportunities for students to take advantage of - locally, around the country, and internationally. Each semester, I coordinate the \"Matthew 25\" program, a service-immersion experience in Downtown Los Angeles in which students spend 3-5 days in Skid Row. We participate in a variety of service opportunities each day and base-camp at a local homeless-services organization overnight. This exposure to local, extreme poverty has proven to be impactful on many levels and an experience that has shaped the lens of social justice for countless students over the years.Doing disaster-relief post-Katrina in New Orleans was my first volunteer involvement at Loyola upon returning to LA after undergrad and, since then, I have guided service-immersions to Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. Most recently, I\'ve helped develop an annual programmatic visit to migrant shelters in Mexicali (Baja California) to meet asylum-seekers and learn first-hand about migration issues.

ABOUT NEAL ANDERBERG

I\'m a native Angeleno, a public servant, and an advocate for social change through academic instruction, strategic policy implementation, experiential service-immersion, and good old fashioned hard work.I help develop community-service experiences for various LA-area high schools, and am a member of the Business Administration faculty at Mount Saint Mary\'s University, Los Angeles - a school ranked as one of the \"Most Transformative\" in the nation for its students\' social-mobility upon graduation. I believe a well-rounded education includes both formal academic instruction, as well as the formative experiences obtained through travel and community service.Beyond the classroom, my work has centered on equity for marginalized populations through political campaigns, consulting projects with nonprofit clients, and almost two decades on Los Angeles Neighborhood Council committees focused on urban planning, homelessness, and civic engagement. I\'ve spent many years working with the unhoused community of Los Angeles, in Skid Row and beyond, and continue to educate students, communities, and businesses about the reality of poverty in LA and how we can all pitch in to address this humanitarian crisis. As of 2024, I humbly serve as a Commissioner on the LA County Consumer Affairs Advisory Commission, by appointment of Supervisor Lindsey Horvath.
