About Nazmul Chaudhury

More than two decades of experience as a development economist working with international financial institutions, governments, academia, NGOs, and civil society organizations. Highly skilled in strategic policy dialogue, working closely with governments, conducting economic research on Human Capital (e.g, education, social safety nets, labor markets, jobs, health), Poverty and Inequality, Gender Equity, Water, Sanitation, and Environment. Hands-on experience in project management from inception to evaluation, and proposal/report writing. Extensive country-based including field-based experience: I have worked and led multi-sectorial, interdisciplinary projects, both in lending and analytics, in multiple regions (South Asia, East and West Africa, East Asia and Pacific, Middle East and North Africa) in various country contexts covering different income level and Fragile and Conflict-affected situations. Proven experience and track-record in evidence-based policy dialogue to advance education, particularly girls’ education; social protection reforms and to expand social safety net programs including cash-transfers, while managing technical complexities and political sensitivities of each country.Research output includes publications in peer reviewed academic journals (economics & multidisciplinary journals), working papers and book chapters. For example, a global leader on the research on the quality of service delivery in education and health in low- and middle-income countries. Research papers honored: The Nobel Prize Committee which awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics to Michael Kramer (along with Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo) cited the provider absence work, indicating how influential it had been in shifting the thinking in academia and global development policy. Besides two decades of research experience integrating operations with analytics, teaching experience at the university level, such as at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service (USA), National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (Japan), Korean Development Institute (KDI); Adviser to Japanese International Cooperation Agency-Research Institute (JICA-RI) on Impact Evaluation and Labor Market Programs. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Massachusetts at Amherst; Master\'s in Natural Resource Economics from University of Massachusetts at Amherst; double PhDs in Development Economics and Environmental Economics from Michigan State University.
