About Nathan Li
Recently, I discovered the importance of reflection and the influence it has on self-improvement. Being able to recognize how you have grown allows you to appreciate any and all progress that you have made. The sport of football was my first passion, and helped shape me into the person I am today. The past 9 years of discipline and commitment taught me numerous skills that I was not able to recognize at the time. For example, although it may be a cliche, I truly learned the importance of teamwork. During times when my motivation was low, I would simply look around and see that everyone else was suffering through the same torture I was. I realized that I was truly part of a unit, and that everything I did had an impact on the man next to me. While harsh, this allowed for an unbreakable bond. We supported each other through the worst, and victory was an indescribable joy. My proudest accomplishment of high school was starting a charity group during quarantine. It provided me with an opportunity to help those who were less fortunate, and gave me a sense of purpose. While I knew I was supporting an important cause, I never realized the impact of my actions. I was able to provide the members of my team with a group of like-minded individuals who shared the passion of giving back, and they were able to feel the joy of helping others. I also unified my community as our events created an opportunity for others to donate. Looking back, I am extremely grateful for being able to experience growth during a time of crisis. At IU, I am continuing to use reflection as a means to spark self-improvement both as a learner and as a person. Reflecting has allowed me to become more self-aware of my strengths and weaknesses, providing an opportunity to improve my shortcomings. Furthermore, I have been able to adopt new learning strategies to adapt to the new environment and to optimize learning. Moving forward, I will continue to create more opportunities that will allow me to reflect positively on. As a professional and a lifelong learner, I look forward to developing and applying these skills throughout my career, maintaining an open mind as I search for new learning opportunities.
