As a web developer, my job is to build and design smooth digital experiences for our students at BCU. To create the website, I use a Content Management System (CMS) provided by our service provider, Membership Solution Limited (MSL), along with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. During my first few months at the company, I noticed that we didn’t cater to students who faced issues when using a desktop or mobile device. When carrying out an audit on the website in 2022, our accessibility score was 50%. After implementing ReciteMe, carrying out tests via Google Lighthouse and cleaning up code our accessibility score improved to 75%, bringing us closer to achieving WCAG compliance.A big focus of my role is to enhance user retention by improving the website’s UX and UI. To help build different pages and maintain a consistent design across the site, I collaborate with an amazing graphic designer on my team using Figma. Together, we plan the UX flow to increase viewer retention and decrease bounce rates, which have dropped by 20% since 2023.Keeping the website secure is another aspect of my job. This includes tracking user security, resolving login issues, and ensuring our hosting provider is secure and up to date. Being an organized developer helps me stay on top of this and reduces the chances of any security risks or issues.
