Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always had a strong ability to communicate effectively through writing. As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to continue improving, either by self teaching, or taking courses during my undergrad years. Following the completion of my degree I decided to spend more time working on screenwriting, firstly in the sitcom genre. After my experience writing successful comedy news copy at Tumbleweed, I gained further confidence in my comedy screenwriting skills. I’ve written scripts for several short films that I produced or coproduced with a team of actors, directors, and production assistants. My TV and film writing portfolio includes an original animated sitcom, a spec sitcom script, and two drama/sci-fi features. Drawing on a skill I learned via writing personal creative nonfiction essays, I’ve spent more time focusing on writing meaningful drama; my goal is to connect with audiences while creating a larger narrative so the audience may walk away having learned more about specific aspects of the human experience. My passion has grown thanks to more national attention on queer film and the lack of diverse and honest storytelling, not only as it relates to queer film, but also as it relates to diverse writers and filmmakers taking on other serious subject matters. I will continue to work more on my writing portfolio, not only to improve my craft, but also to show queer voices can provide new perspectives across more genres outside of the LGBTQ+ genre. My skills have come a long way from being the kid in school who enjoyed writing research papers, but my goal of researching and effectively communicating meaningful narratives to my audience is still just as inspired as it’s ever been.
