ABOUT NATHAN RICE
My career in the energy industry spans 15 years, multiple countries and nearly all aspects of a Fortune 500 Controllers organization. Upon graduation from the McCombs School of Business in 2010, I joined Marathon Oil Company, in the Technical Accounting – Advisory Team. We worked on complex transactions, M&A, new standards and policy development. My primary focus during this time was the disposition accounting and SEC reporting for the spin-off of Marathon Petroleum Company into a separate downstream company. I then moved into core operational accounting roles, both in the US and West Africa. Using primarily SAP ECC, I oversaw the accounting for capital projects, accounts payable, production revenue, and a large local payroll. In 2018 I left Controllers to join the Operations Planning function as a manager responsible for Marathon’s businesses in Equatorial Guinea and legacy US. We reimagined our planning process, strategically located roles amongst US and International, and implemented a new planning system (Anaplan). In March 2022 I returned to Controllers in a leadership role, responsible for internal and external reporting, the monthly accounting close and consolidations, and master data governance. I championed the use of Workiva at Marathon Oil. In this role, we managed the reporting for Marathon’s $3 billion acquisition of Ensign’s Eagle Ford assets. I was promoted to the Senior Leadership Team where I managed key workstreams associated with ConocoPhillips’ acquisition of Marathon, which closed in November 2024. Retained to manage critical work scope during the transition, I’m looking forward to my next opportunity in this dynamic industry beginning in January 2026.
