About Nathan Workman

The past 20+ years my career has felt more like play than work, since I have enjoyed immensely diving headfirst into studying and acquiring the skills necessary to serve effectively as an archaeological field supervisor, office manager, ArcSDE database administrator, and a GIS analyst/manager/developer. After several years as a contract archaeologist traveling across the United States, I returned to my alma mater, Penn State, and obtained a Post-BA Certificate in GIS. Wearing various hats as a geospatial professional, I have organized high-volume map production, queried/visualized/created multi-state datasets, post-processed GPS rover files, designed/deployed/maintained ArcSDE databases, and coded custom Python tools to automate time-consuming workflows. As a manager, I have overseen multimillion-dollar projects and supervised field/office crews numbering 30+ employees, while serving as an author on nearly 50 technical reports, presenting investigation results, detailing research designs, discussing interpretations, designing artifact inventory tables, and NRHP recommendations along with creating report figures. In the field, I’ve directed GPS/total station mapping of archaeological sites ranging from a Hohokam village to a Colonial-Era cemetery. In addition, I have designed Trimble data dictionaries for large area cultural surveys and developed/tested database schemas (along with Python data validation/loading tools) from customer specifications. Current project - Developing GIS web applications with JavaScript/React for data tasking/scraping, connecting file shares, validating field data, and importing/converting/archiving aerial imagery.
