About Nathan Phillips
Experience Nathan has worked in the Resin Development Department at TCR Composites for 16.5 years and currently holds the position of Chief Chemist/Scientist -R&D/QA Laboratory Manager. He has more than 10 years of experience in senior management and leadership of an R&D group. With more than 16 years of resin formulation and testing experience, Nathan is a SME of resin formulation and chemistry/engineering effects. He also is a SME in mathematical modeling approaches of the resin cure cycle process and in cure recipe design. Nathan is the chief research scientist and formulator responsible for more than thirty developmental room-temperature-stable prepreg resins. Resins formulated to meet requirements such as Airbus/Boeing FST classification, curable at temperatures <200 °F, glow-in-the-dark capability, tailored electrical conductivity, snap-cure behavior, high-performance COPV resins, and high Tg with combined toughness performance. Nathan possesses strong formulation knowledge and an understanding of the chemistries of epoxy and cyanate ester thermosets. He also has a good understanding of the chemistry of acrylate, benzoxazine, and bismaleimide resins. Education Nathan earned a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science in Polymer Science & Engineering from Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, PA. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and an Associate of Applied Science in Chemical Technology, from Weber State University in Ogden, UT. Technical Skills/Abilities Nathan has strong working and operational knowledge of the instrumentation and analysis techniques associated with polymers including Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Rheology. Nathan is able to demonstrate excellent working knowledge of the organic chemistry and associated polymerization mechanisms for thermoset polymers, the physical chemistry of polymers, structure/property relationships, the science of polymer adhesion, and tailoring cure cycles to achieve maximum property development. Nathan also has a working knowledge of the mechanical failure mechanisms of resins and composite materials.
