About Nathan Capps
Dr. Nathan A. Capps is a staff scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division. His research looks to transform and accelerate nuclear fuel development and qualification by exploiting modern modeling and simulation tools at its onset to evaluate constituent and system selections to target high impact integral fuel performance test. In essence, his research takes a fully integrated approach by informing separate effects testing with modeling and simulation results to support the justification for large scale integral LOCA testing. During his career, Dr. Capps’s work has primarily focused on Light Water Rector nuclear fuels materials with a specific focus on understanding steady state and transient fuel rod performance in high burnup fuel. His expertise also extends to assessing both Zr/UO2 and Accident Tolerant Fuels under Pellet-Cladding Interaction as well as Reactivity Insertion Accident analysis. Dr. Capps received a Bachelor’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 2012 followed by his Master’s Degree in 2013 Doctorate Degree in 2016 from the same University.
