About Nate Monroe

Nate Monroe is the executive editor of The Tributary, a nonprofit investigative newsroom based in Jacksonville, Fl. Before that, Nate wrote a column about Florida for the USA Today Network, exploring how power works in the gilded, strange, humid heart of the modern Republican Party. He was previously a metro columnist, beat reporter and investigative reporter for the Florida Times-Union, where he focused on covering Jacksonville City Hall, the largest municipal government in Florida. Prior to arriving in Jacksonville in 2013, Nate was a reporter for newspapers in the Florida Panhandle and South Louisiana, where he wrote about hurricanes, small-town corruption, oil spills, Army Corps screw-ups, Mardi Gras, and bingo nights at the senior citizens center.Nate was part of a team of Times-Union reporters who scrutinized a scandalous effort to privatize JEA, Jacksonville\'s city-owned electric and water utility, work that is credited with helping to halt the effort, prompting voter-led reforms, and launching a federal investigation into the controversy. He was part of a team in 2016 that uncovered a sham charity with ties to former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, which was ultimately the centerpiece of a federal indictment and later her conviction on fraud and tax crimes. He and a colleague also produced a groundbreaking investigation into the flood risks associated with deep dredging of the St. Johns River over the past century. Nate\'s work has won numerous awards. In 2022, he was a co-recipient of the Frances DeVore Award for Public Service and the Lucy Morgan Award for In-Depth Reporting from the Florida Press Club - its two highest honors - for a year-long project investigating the botched effort to privatize Jacksonville\'s public utility. He won a national Sigma Delta Chi award for column writing in 2020 from the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2018 he was named the Sunshine State Awards reporter of the year for the state of Florida for stories on Hurricane Irma, city politics and public corruption. Other recognition includes first place in the 2022 Sunshine State Awards for commentary, first place in the 2019 Sunshine State Awards for government reporting; co-recipient of the 2017 Integrity Florida Award for Public Corruption Reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists\' Florida chapter; and a co-recipient of the Florida Press Club\'s Freedom of Information Award in 2016.
