With my breadth of experience in the area of Communication, I was recently hired to teach undergraduate students in Kean University’s School of Communication, Media and Journalism. Currently, I teach a course titled Speech Communication as Critical Citizenship, an overview course that not only highlights the different areas of communication studies but also focuses on how good communications skills- specifically in the areas of public discourse- foster civic engagement. Through engaging techniques, and focus on every day application, I aim to educate students to be less persuaded by communicators who distort the issues, help them understand the complexity of societal issues, and help them learn to interact with each other in groups in ways that enhance our society. The general purpose of the class is to make students more creative in their problem solving and more reflective thinkers in everyday life. In this way, they become empowered to change their own part of the world.
