ABOUT NATALIA LUMBY

As an educator and researcher I am passionate about business and technology. With a cross disciplinary Masters degree in both of these areas, I focus on delivering experiential learning opportunities in my teaching. I strongly believe we learn by doing, trying, sometimes failing, and then doing some more. I have delivered over a decade of innovative curriculum at TMU. I am especially keen about course design and development. Working with leading edge technology in the classroom, I seek opportunities to put current industry problems in front of future industry leaders. Using a variety of project structures ranging from complex project plans, product prototypes, category assessment reports and unique personal portfolios, I prepare students to confidently enter the workforce. No simple essays in my classroom! My research interests concentrate on innovation in food and beverage packaging. With a special focus on design and technology, I explore packaging from a variety of lenses including the consumer, the brand owner, the packager and the retailer. Most recently I have completed projects that focus on consumer perception, identifying what visual cues brands should use to appeal to the millennial target market. I am now beginning to use those principles to evaluate how we can shift the packaging industry towards making sustainable packaging a priority. In addition to my academic duties I also enjoy writing and speaking about advancements in packaging and the graphic arts. I also maintain a creative practise, exploring modern calligraphy and illustration. I use these creative skills to support charitable opportunities in the community.
