Berkeley is one of six cities in California with it\'s own waste division, with a strong division and $29M annual budget; it is the place where curbside recycling was born, the first to ban styrofoam, and a leader in zero waste policy. As chair of the commission during several years of service, I have helped create and advance locally and regionally important policies and plans including: 20••••09 writing of the seminal plastic bag ban ordinance (used in several jurisdictions and now as a upcoming countywide mandate), construction demolition debris ordinance, organics program and county green waste landfill ban, producer responsibility, and other pragmatic elements of achieving zero waste by 2020.
