ABOUT NAOMI PENFOLD
I am looking for opportunities in data science and business analysis. I think we can build better solutions for the problems we face when we are informed about what\'s going on from the data we have available today. I love spotting patterns and solving problems. As a scientist, I\'m attuned to finding the gaps in the data too - the numbers don\'t always tell the full story, and I\'m motivated to get to the truth. In August 2023, I completed an intensive full-time course in professional data analysis from CodeClan (SQA level 8), where I became proficient in R, Python and SQL. Our course was interrupted by the provider going into liquidation before we ended, but we were resilient as a group and finished the course together (with support from our instructors). Project work at github.com/npscience. Since then, I\'ve been working with the NHS in Scotland, preparing and analysing data about the workforce (staff, trainees, vacancies) and supporting the production of official statistics and business information for many stakeholders. I routinely use R, SQL and PowerBI in my work. I bring over 10 years’ experience in research, analysis and design across several settings: from biology lab to consultant for funding agencies, from advocacy/communications to internet technologies. This journey exposed me to the principles of open source technology, design thinking and systems practice, which I continue to apply to my work. I show up as a leader and facilitator at work – I take responsibility for understanding the problem, getting the work done, and making sure we can work together to do so. In previous roles, I have:* conducted useful design research as a consultant to multiple clients in science, philanthropy and industry * led multi-stakeholder engagement and research projects on the internet infrastructure for preprints * designed and produced events and content that fostered innovation and collaboration in science publishing and open science (a community effort in academic science)* helped lead US-based not-for-profit organizations In 2016, I completed my PhD in neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, following on from a BSc (Hons) in Natural Sciences (biological), in which I was awarded a 1st for my final year research project.
