I am a final-year PhD candidate in the College of Medicine and Health at APC Microbiome Ireland. My research project is focused on elucidating mechanisms of westernised diet in the gastrointestinal tract and its connections to intestinal inflammation, particularly in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). My work centers on identifying alterations in signaling pathways, barrier function, and physiological aspects of the intestinal epithelium. To accomplish this, I employ a multidimensional approach that includes the analysis of IBD RNAseq datasets, in vivo pre-clinical models, and in vitro cell cultures, including murine intestinal organoids.Furthermore, my project also incorporates public and patient involvement (PPI). I have established an IBD patient collaborator panel to collaboratively create a journal article that highlights the patient\'s perspective on dietary patterns in IBD. I am part of the Host-Microbe and Inflammation Group, working under the guidance of Dr. Silvia Melgar and Dr. Ken Nally.

ABOUT NAOMI HANRAHAN
Final-year PhD student at APC Microbiome Ireland, University College Cork, possessing a comprehensive understanding of mechanisms and scientific techniques within the fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology. My primary research focus centers on the affect of dietary components on intestinal epithelial cells and their physiological functions, primarily through the utilisation of cell cultures, such as primary cell organoids.
