ABOUT NANCY LACROIX
Over the past 3 years, I\'ve become very aware of how many people in our own community are food \"insecure\". The definition of food insecurity is a lack of regular access to safe, nutritious food. This is more commonplace than I believe society truly appreciates and while it existed long before COVID, the impact of COVID has clearly shone a light on this issue, magnifying just how far reaching this issue is.The circumstances of those in need vary and it’s not only families who are suffering. I’ve seen firsthand the impact it’s had on seniors and young adults, who do not have children. These demographics are getting lost in the outcry for assistance from those with children. The challenge is there\'s a hole that isn\'t necessarily filled by food banks. While they do what they can, they are not typically able to provide perishables like milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt or if they do, it does not last for more than a few days, let alone two weeks. Following is a comment from a member in the community who relies on food banks: “I wish they would get more donations of fresh fruits and vegetables from farmers and grocery stores. Even if each family was given one bag of apples or oranges and a head of lettuce.”Our VisionA place where members can come for food when they are in need, but it will be a gathering place; envision a Starbucks meets a Grocery Store meets a Community Centre. Where a member can come, enjoy a cup of coffee in the lounge area or grab a book from the “library”, have some quiet time away from home, come to lend a hand or socialize with other members.Mission StatementTo create a self-sufficient organization where members will have access to groceries they are unable to obtain otherwise; where there will be no judgement for individual member’s circumstances, but where members will only find caring and support. To provide access to resources they wouldn\'t have otherwise, be given the opportunity and ability to develop new, real relationships and create a safe, supportive network for all.Where members who desire to find their purpose, to find their happiness, but are feeling lost and overwhelmed, where everything seems so hopeless, can truly become part of a community and gain a purpose.Member RequirementsThose who participate will be required to give back, pay it forward in some form. It\'s recognized that many members are not able to do this financially, but they can contribute by volunteering at Nanny’s Place 10 hours a month. This is where they will be able to create new friendships and find support in the process.
