About Sumitra Nair

As a journalist with more than ten years of experience, I seek out stories in the intersections of women, politics, gender, social media, government, and entertainment. I have worked with long-standing leaders in the print business like The Times Group and The Indian Express in my career. Currently, I work as a Senior sub-editor at The Week where I write and edit articles and also manage the magazine\'s social media presence. All my life, I was brought up not to be apologetic, not to be ashamed of who I am, by two strong-headed women - my mother and my grandmother. I have seen the challenges and pressures she faced as a single mother in society. Her ability to succeed as a professional and as a mother on her own terms has inspired me.

   May 2017 — Present · Cochin, IN

   Went inside the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh, to highlight the plight of Rohingya refugees, often known as the ‘nowhere people’ bringing their struggles to the forefront of global consciousness. Interviewed women’s rights activists, Mariam Atahi and Hikmat Noori, based in Kabul, Afghanistan, in the wake of the Taliban’s ascension to political power speaking about the fear of regressive norms that could return. Interviewed known sociologist Nandini Sardesai and other related experts on ‘Why India is still unfair to its girls and women’ highlighting different issues affecting the LGBTQ community in India. Interviewed activist Sridhar Rangayan, and shed light on the current status of the LGBTQ community in the country, and what freedom means to them. Interviewed the first openly gay politician, Harrish Iyer who joined the Congress party
