As the Chief Design Engineer (CDE) for Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (EC & I), I am accountable for development of the fully integrated technical solutions and governance across the EC & I scope. I provide the senior technical and programme leadership of large multi-disciplinary teams, across all aspects of the Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Power Station EC & I design. The scope covers all Power Station areas including Reactor Island C&I, Conventional Island C&I and Power Station Electrical systems. My key responsibilities include:• Technically leading and driving the EC & I design programme.• Managing large multidisciplinary teams to deliver the full scope of the Power Station EC & I Design scope.• Own the delivery programme for EC & I scope of supply and manage suitable design milestone schedules.• Deliver the required design definition to the programme.• Define and manage the required elements of all lifecycle management aspects of the EC & I scope.• Managing system, sub-system and structure requirements across the full scope and ensuring requirements are satisfied in accordance with any required verification and validation plans and programmes.• Developing design and product cost estimates, managing the wider technical attributes for EC & I scope and maintaining the associated opportunity and risk registers. • Developing and implementing robust governance processes for EC & I scope of supply, integrating it into the wider power station / programme governance cycle.• Delivering and owning any generated engineering safety cases.• Owning the design configuration control process for my area of accountability, integrated with the wider programme. • Developing and leading the capability of the business across the EC & I scope.• Implementing the programme Health, Safety and Environment policy on all designated activities.

I am the Chief Design Engineer (CDE) for EC & I and a member of Rolls-Royce SMR Senior Leadership Team since October 2022. In my role, I am accountable for development of the fully integrated technical solutions and governance across EC & I. I provide senior technical and programme leadership of large multi-disciplinary teams, across all aspects of the Rolls Royce Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Power Station Electrical, Controls and Instrumentation design. The scope covers all Power Station areas including Reactor Island C&I, Conventional Island C&I and Power Station Electrical systems. My accountability includes: the overall direction and governance of the programmes of work under my scope; accepting the validity of the technical solutions developed under my direction; the delivery of a robust design and safety justification; the integration of this solution into the overall design; EC & I capability leadership and development across the business and problem resolution within this boundary. I am a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET). As the Chief Design Engineer EC & I, I am responsible for providing leadership and direction to the EC & I teams.Over the last few years, I have developed:• Strong management, organisational & interpersonal skills • Ability to provide technical leadership in the EC & I discipline• Understanding of financial principles and business reporting• Ability to communicate to a variety of audiences• Working Knowledge of Quality Management Systems & Financial SystemsI have over 25 years C&I experience working in nuclear industry, having started my career with British Energy in 1998 on the graduate training programme. I have substantial experience working as a C&I Engineer in the Data Processing and Control Systems and Process C&I disciplines within central technical organisation (CTO) as well as working as a Design Engineer at HPB Power station for 18 months. My areas of technical expertise include control system analysis and design, Instrumentation, data processing systems, graphite in-core monitoring system etc. At EDF I was fully authorised Safety Case Officer, Author and Verifier for up to Category 2 safety cases. I served as the discipline chairman of the IET at EDF Energy.I have gained strong technical and leadership skills over the time I have been in the nuclear industryI am also an industry member of Sheffield University Industrial Liaison Committees for the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering and the Department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering.
