ABOUT NADIA KHALAF

I am an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersection of cultural heritage, climate change, and environmental policy. I currently work at the UK Met Office in the International Applied Science and Services team, in Climate Services Development. I am an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Exeter. My background is in archaeology, remote sensing and Geographical Information Science (GIS), with a focus on understanding how human activity and climate change impact heritage and cultural landscapes. I have led numerous landscape surveys—primarily in Africa—that combine field investigation, satellite imagery, and GIS analysis. My work includes directing excavations, field surveys, and community engagement, as well as training local researchers in remote sensing and GIS-based archaeological survey methods.Beyond academia, I have significant experience in fostering strategic partnerships and knowledge exchange for large organisations as an Impact and Partnership Development Manager. I have successfully secured major research funding, including over £1m in UKRI grants for heritage science-related projects.My research and cartography have been used in key policy documents, including the Working Group II contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. I also served as an expert reviewer for the UNEP GEO-7 report and have published in leading journals such as Nature Climate Change, Remote Sensing, and the Journal of Field Archaeology.In 2023, I was recognised for my leadership in the arts, heritage, and culture sectors and was selected as a Clore Leadership Emerging Leader.
