Mustafa takes a leadership position in architectural education through continuous involvement as a teacher, juror and as a memberof the Dean’s Advisory Board at Cornell (past Co-Chairman 20••••12). As the Chairman of the SOM Foundation since 2005 he directs the support of the firm in educational excellence in the design fields through grants and fellowships to graduating students and has elevated the stature of the annual Student Traveling Fellowships. He has thought and lectured at Cornell, and lectured at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, and several international schools of architecture for the past 15 years. Numerous organizations and institutions have recognized Mustafa’s contribution to architecture with awards and honors including his election as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) in 2007. Many of his projects have been recognized by his peers and have received awards from the American Institute of Architects ( AIA), Chicago Athenaeum, Progressive Architecture Awards and, was published in Metropolis, Architectural Review, Cassabella and A+U magazines. His projects were published in numerous books, including; Tokyo Midtown, Masterpieces of Hospital Architecture and Design, The Contemporary Mosque and House of Worship. In addition, his projects were featured at the Venice and São Paolo Architecture Biennales, at the Skyscraper Museum and Center for Architecture in New York, the New York Public Library, and at a recent exhibition in Tokyo featuring SOM’s current work.

ABOUT MUSTAFA ABADAN
Mustafa Kemal Abadan is a design partner in the architectural firm of Skidmore Owings and Merrill LLP ( SOM) specializing in complex and challenging projects. Educated at Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning, he received his Bachelor of Architecture 1982, and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design 1984. Mustafa joined SOM in 1983 and has been with the firm now for 40 years, during that time he has worked in the New York and London offices and was elected as a Partner in 1995. Projects such as Time Warner Center in NY, 101 Warren Street in NY, Zuckerman Cancer Research Building at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital NY and Tokyo MidTown in Japan exemplify the ambitious urban projects for which Mustafa has been known. His recent projects completed construction in NY include the expansion of CUNY John Jay College, Center for Advanced Science and Medicine at Mt Sinai Hospital, and the new Katz Woman’s Hospital at NSLIJ. While SOM has always been an international firm, Mustafa’s multicultural background, his foreign language skills and diplomatic upbringing have enabled him to expand SOM’s international practice. Mustafa designed SOM’s first completed commercial buildings in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Brazil, Chile and Kazakhstan.
