ABOUT MUNIA FERDOUSHI

I started my doctoral studies in January of 2023 at the Khan Lab of the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Southern California. Our lab focuses on developing Flexible Electronics for novel biomedical applications while addressing the inherent shortcomings and biases of the current medical diagnostic scene. The research in our lab is intrinsically multidisciplinary, requiring a wide range of skills, including nanofabrication facility usage, embedded system design, firmware development, machine learning, and electrochemistry. My main Ph.D. project is the multimodal sensing of physiological, chemical, and neural biomarkers of psychiatry and the identification of mental states with the help of machine learning. For this, I have been working on the design and implementation of a wearable device for Electroencephalography (EEG) signal monitoring and the detection of physiologically relevant neurotransmitters and hormones via aptamer-based sensing. My research encompasses printed electronics, fabricating microneedle-based sensors and Indium Oxide field effect transistors, and optimization of electrochemical sensing modalities for continuous monitoring of neural and chemical biomarkers of mental health. I am also experienced in developing circuits and systems for wirelessly monitoring these biomarkers, automating psychiatric experiments to streamline data collection, and utilizing machine learning tools for data analysis - aiming to create comprehensive, innovative, non-invasive tools for real-time mental health diagnostics.Prior to engaging in research on wearable electronics, I worked on the modeling and optimization of plasmonic-enhanced solar cells for my M.Sc. and B.Sc thesis. I am experienced in FDTD simulation and Comsol multiphysics semiconductor module. Moreover, I have implemented machine learning models and neural networks in various domains, such as phonocardiogram-based heart disease detection, eye gaze estimation, fault identification in power systems, etc.
