Commonwealth Scholars are students who have an interest in helping bring health and medical change to communities and areas of their choice. As a Commonwealth Scholar, I am doing my research in the Health and Wellness in Aging Groups Cohort where I am part of clinical research. ABOUT MUHAMMAD USMAN B.
Senior at VCU majoring in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry with a minor in Psychology and a Certificate in Global Education with a Peace Corps Certification. I am a pre-health student who plans on going into the medical field in the near future with interests in surgery, palliative care, and neonatal care. I currently volunteer in various organizations such as Sentara Northern Medical Center, Woodbridge Faith Center, Richmond Public School systems, and Ascend Health. I am a certified Hospice volunteer with my certification in general hospice, dementia, and aromatherapy. I also have experience working with AUTOCAD and jGRASP for programming and design. My past research experience includes work in the field, testing and analyzing work samples and I also have experience working in a research lab to generate a spit test for athletes to detect a concussion (both with poster presentations). Currently, my research is with the College of Health Professions at VCU as a Commonwealth Scholar in figuring out ways to enhance African American genomic research participation while also finding the disparities in the healthcare field and finding ways to mitigate them. I plan on traveling abroad with Doctors without Borders and the Peace Corp to help expand medicine into lesser fortunate countries.
