Founded nationally-recognized Practice Experience Program (PEP). The PEP is a highly specialized technical team scoped to create novel strategies to address EHR usability issues for physicians. The PEP provides services to 1,800+ physicians to improve Inpatient and Ambulatory physician user experience and satisfaction with the EHR. The program uses a combination of technical training, EHR system optimization, and workflow redesign. Identifies system-wide EHR challenges impacting physicians, develops solutions, assesses the viability of solutions technically and within clinical workflows, generates budget proposals and business case documentation, obtains organizational approval and funding for the solution, and executes approved projects. Recent projects include- Created and implemented strategy to reduce physician burnout and improve response time for patient portal messages. Established a RN Triage unit to manage messages per month. Improved turnaround time with 97% of messages handled in 24 hours and realized 50% reduction in messages requiring physician intervention- Optimized progress note templates for Internal Medicine Residents which resulted in a 47 day reduction in time spent writing per year, while reducing overall note length and copied forward text- Led physician inbox message reduction effort which removed 1,268,021 unnecessary messages in 2023, through evaluation of EHR messaging rules. The project also ensures the prevention of outdated or no longer relevant messages in the future.Established Clinical Informatics Externship, the first of its kind at UC Davis, which provides a 10-month opportunity for 4 graduate students per year to gain EHR and Informatics experience. The program serves as a health professions pathways program aimed at building a diverse workforce.Began national EHR Optimization Collaborative with 47 hospital member organizations to distribute best practices for Health IT adoption and usability.
