I work on the software defined line of products at NetApp. My primary areas of work include performance enhancements, leveraging linux and cloud ecosystem features, and containerization. Before that I have worked on filesystem development at NetApp, focused on the following subareas of file-system: block-allocation, block-frees, buffer-cache, MP and general file-system performance. Even before that, I started my career at Novell and also at NetApp working on networking appliances dealing with firewall, proxy & VPNs.Skills/Specialties:Filesystems & kernel development. Software Defined & Cloud Computing.Kernel/systems programming and debugging, handling customer escalations.Networking - TCP/IP, proxy, firewall, vpns.Performance analysis - mostly Intel based systems, and a bit on ARM.

Experience

  1. Principal Engineer

    NetApp

    Jul 2004 — Present

Working on Software Defined versions of OnTap & core OnTap components dealing with data management such as the file-system. Currently involved in a software only version of NetApp Cloud Volume Service(CVS) that is based on core OnTap data management components in linux containers managed within Kubernetes clusters. NetApp CVS is a cloud native file service that provides NAS volumes over NFS and SMB in hyperscaler cloud environments such as GCP, Azure and AWS. One set of problems being solved for software defined revolve around performance as we don’t have the luxury of running on custom built NetApp hardware. Another set is about implementing new features by leveraging capabilities that are commonly available in the hyperscaler cloud ecosystem. And then there is another set which is the containerization work itself & management within the Kubernetes framework.Working on WAFL (NetApp\'s filesystem on NetApp products, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write_Anywhere_File_Layout) and OnTap (NetApp\'s Storage OS, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ONTAP) development at NetApp Bangalore since Oct-Nov 2006. Lead engineer for WAFL subarea dealing with consistency point mechanism which includes block-allocation and block-frees. The team is spread across 3 NetApp engineering sites, 2 in the US and 1 in Bangalore.Past Projects:* consistency point scaling for many many volumes.* consistency point performance improvements for benchmarks.* design and implementation of the next generation block-allocator for WAFL.Others:* maintenance of current and old releases which involves debugging, core analysis, bug fixing.* handling escalations from customers-Part of NetCache team from Jul 2004 to Oct-Nov 2006. NetCache was NetApp\'s web caching appliance.Projects:* enhancement to SSL certificate management utility on NetCache.* terminating http CONNECT requests on NetCache.Others:* development and maintenance of the following modules: dns, https, nntp, TCP/IP stack.
