WORK HISTORY
Head of Housing, Skills & Population @Highlands And Islands Enterprise
Housing, Skills and Population:I currently lead on HIE\'s work to help address the rural housing crisis which has become an economic crisis for our region. I have worked for HIE over the past three decades in various roles, primarily linked to skills and education. As Head of Universities, Education & Skills for the region, over the past 15 years, I have worked closely with the University of the Highlands and Islands, as well as developing strategic relationships with other Scottish Universities. My work focuses on population - addressing depopulation in many parts of our region (esp west coast and island communities) and influencing Scottish-wide policy to ensure it recognises the different issues and conditions experienced in rural H&I. A major part of this work involves addressing the serious housing shortages in the region.I lead the Science Skills Academy project - funded by Scottish Government to deliver exciting and inspirational STEM to all 10 - 14 year olds in the Highland Council region.Working closely with SDS I work to ensure that the skills and education provision for the region fits our needs with a particular priority on Energy, Construction and Nature-based jobs.I am involved in Scotland-wide committees and steering groups, ensuring that policies and activities are effectively applied to ensure impact on the H&I region. Ultimately, I seek to improve the innovation ecosystem in the region, and address the major loss to our region of 2500 young people every year that leave to attend universities in other parts of Scotland. I live in the west highlands and know first-hand the challenges faced by remote and rural communities in the Highlands & Islands of Scotland.
