I teach both Writing and Rhetoric (English 134), Argumentation (English 145), and Technical Writing for Engineers (English 149) at Cal Poly.English 134 is a required composition course at Cal Poly. Simply stated, this course is implemented to develop student writing. Students are required to write four substantial papers with different rhetorical goals; revise their own writing; and give presentations to practice oral rhetoric. My goal as an instructor is to encourage the idea of writing as a process. To do this, I utilize lessons, homework, and projects that demand continual writing and revision. English 145 is a course in argumentation. Students are expected to learn the necessary critical thinking strategies to deconstruct all kinds of rhetoric, from simple conversations with friends, to fallacious advertisements. English 145 is very writing and reading heavy, as I believe the only way to grow critical thinking skills is to encourage and implement independent thinking.English 149 is a writing course specifically for engineers. In this course, students learn all about the technical communication field. I assign five major projects per quarter:(1) a resume/cover letter (2) an interview memo (3) a group project centered around a how-to video (4) a recommendation report (5) an ePortfolio. The goal of this course is to foster critical thinking, analysis, and communicationskills in the engineering field both inside and outside of the classroom space.
