ABOUT MORGAN HIBBERT

I completed my MASC in Mechanical Engineering in April 2017. Before that I received a BASC in Engineering Physics. For my research I designed and built a custom machine for the purpose of studying the wheel / rail interaction of trains in the railroad industry. The resultant machine was a heavily modified industrial bandsaw. I designed and created every piece from machining custom pieces, building small scale electronics to writing the software that ran the experiments. I was part of a larger team researching the same field, but my particular research was completed solo and so the ability to work alone for many hours while still functioning as part of a larger team was very critical to my projects success. Before completing my MASC I worked for a R&D engineering company as a Mechanical, Electrical and Design Engineer as well as an experimentalist. As a smaller company I was required to be very adaptable and tackle many problems. Despite having an in house programming team I was still responsible for programming the microcontrollers that were used in our department. During my 4 years at this company I also helped supervise and guide several UBC Mechanical Engineering Co-op students. At times I was responsible for liaising with our high profile clients such as the Boeing Company to ensure that their needs were being met. This included training sessions on equipment, weekly reports and presentations. My two strongest assets are: 1) Asking the outside the box questions that no one else considers that leads to identifying potential problems before they occur or solving the problems that have presented themselves and are tricky to solve. 2) Communicating and connecting with people. I form meaningful connections with the people I interact with. This enables me to understand better people’s needs and motivations on their level so I can facilitate better communication between teams attempting to work together and client / customer relations.
