About Monty Schmitt
I am a water resources scientist currently working as a senior project director with The Nature Conservancy\'s Water Program in San Francisco. From 2020-24, I served as a publically elected Director at the Marin Municipal Water District. With over three decades of experience, my current focus is on managing surface and groundwater resources to restore healthy riverine ecosystems in coastal watersheds while improving water supply reliability for communities. In the past, I was a lead scientist in the historic effort to restore flows and salmon to California’s second-largest river, the San Joaquin. I have also worked on state and national flood management having served on Governor Davis’ Taskforce on Floodplain Management in 2001, and worked on the development and implementation of the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan.
