Confucius once said, “the beginning of wisdom is to call things by their proper name”. As an experienced consultant who helps organizations maximize compliance, project management, research, regulations, Managed Care and business development efforts, I agree with this comment. When I enter a client engagement, it is critical for me to clearly identify the problem they are trying to solve and “call it by its proper name”. If the wrong root cause is identified, then all proceeding recommendations and solutions will be misguided. Recognizing this, I invest significant time up front to learn client businesses, interview stakeholders, collect quantitative data, synthesize information and pinpoint high-priority improvement areas.Identifying the problem to be solved is only one ingredient in overall engagement success. Another key component is collaborating with cross-functional client teams to design and implement solutions. I am not an “ivory tower” consultant as I prefer to roll-up my sleeves and work alongside project teams to bring solutions to fruition. I have learned that working on the ground floor of projects not only drives clarity and accountability, but also establishes personal trust and credibility. Finally, it is paramount to deliver results. The best laid plans are for naught if the desired outcomes are not achieved. With that, I make certain to create detailed project plans, milestones and success metrics to keep project teams aligned, focused and moving forward. I also provide executive oversight teams visibility into project progress as their support and engagement is key to consulting engagement success. In the end, great consulting is a balance of art and science and I regularly wear both hats to develop targeted solutions and inspire others to execute them.
