About Mónica Mendoza-Cawthon

Mónica graduated Dec. 2024 with a Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law. While in law school, Mónica externed for the Honorable Chief Justice Steven González of the Washington State Supreme Court, completed Rule 9 internships, worked full-time at King County Department of Public Defense, was a Research Assistant, and a Law Student Liaison for the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission. Her law journal article,\"At-Large Municipal Elections Are Discriminatory: A Case Study of Federal Way and Kent, Washington\" was published by Seattle Journal for Social Justice. She was also awarded the Pro Bono Pledge Outstanding Service Award. Mónica is a daughter of farmworker immigrants (campesinos) from Mexico, the first woman in her family to graduate from college, and the first in her family to attend law school. She is also fluent in Spanish. Prior to law school, Mónica was a community organizer in politics and tenants\' rights advocacy, interned for a U.S. Senator in D.C, worked in the tech sector doing customer and technical support, and was a legal assistant/paralegal in an immigration law office. A recognized community leader, in 2017, Mónica was appointed by the King County Council to serve as a Standing Advisory Panelist for the Regional Affordable Housing Task Force, where she was praised for her commitment to tenants\' and community members\' needs. In 2019, she was selected as a Roberto Maestas Legacy Award Winner by El Centro de la Raza for her fierce commitment to building the beloved community in the Greater Seattle region. In 2024, she was awarded the \"La Resistencia Award\" by Seattle-based Latinx LGBTQ organization SOMOS Seattle. The award honors outstanding local activists and innovators advocating for the Latinx LGBTQ community. She paints and writes poetry in her free time.
