ABOUT MONICA MARTINEZ
I serve as Chair of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, governing a county of residents and overseeing a $1.35 billion public budget during a time of rapid political, environmental, and economic change.Elected in 2024 and sworn in January 2025, I am the first openly LGBTQ+ Santa Cruz County Supervisor in history and the first woman elected to represent the Fifth District.My work focuses on strengthening public systems so they deliver with dignity, equity, and fiscal responsibility. I lead on infrastructure investment, wildfire recovery, transportation governance, healthcare access, and protection of civil rights in response to federal instability.Within my first month in office, I authored and advanced a county resolution affirming protections for LGBTQ+ residents and reproductive autonomy. I established the SHIELD initiative to coordinate cross-agency strategies protecting vulnerable communities and safeguarding our healthcare safety net.Before public office, I served for ten years as CEO of Encompass Community Services, leading a $35 million health and human services organization through large-scale reform, pandemic response, and wildfire recovery.My leadership approach is grounded in public accountability, coalition building, and systems redesign that improves both equity and performance.
