New York, NY, US

Over the course of my 16-year tenure, I have transformed the quality and substance of the photography at Scientific American significantly. Previously a minor visual element, it now plays a large role in the editorial presentation. We shoot original photography and publish with large presentations, full-page, and double-page spreads in 8-to-10-page features. Collaborating with a diverse group of talented image-makers from around the world, we have been able to bring gorgeous photos to our readers for multi-platform display. I introduced and successfully pitched a new online section called \'Science in Images\'. Scientific American was awarded a General Excellence award (Special-Interest Magazines) ASME, 2013.As an experienced visual storyteller, I consistently deliver high-quality, brand-consistent photography and short videos. This role has afforded me the luxury of working on many exciting projects around the world, employing reportage, still life, portraiture, landscape, conceptual, and drone photography. I collaborate closely with scientists, writers, editors, art directors, photographers, and others, seamlessly working either independently or as part of a team as needed. I am experienced in every step of the photo editing process, including pitching features, shoot production, photography direction, editing.I am well-versed in “rights and permissions,” copyright, defamation of character, and “fair use” image law. I collaborate with the business and legal teams to review and create contracts, as well as assess photo usage for potential legal risks. Managing photo shoot budgets, negotiating contracts, securing model releases, and reviewing invoices are essential and detail-oriented tasks I oversee. Additionally, carefully logging our image use and “rights and permissions” is crucial for mitigating legal risks. I encourage positivity and honesty, always striving to meet the highest standards and quality possible.
