About Omar Alam

With more than 18 years of experience, I am a technology leader with a strong background in Oracle Exadata products, SRE, and Cloud DevOps. I started working at Oracle in 2011 and am currently the Principal Member of Technical Staff. Oracle\'s Cloud Infrastructure and Exadata Database Service products are the main focus of my work. My tenure at Oracle has included driving large and complex technical initiatives with cross-functional teams and diverse stakeholders. My strengths include communication and collaboration, mentoring teams, and articulating technical topics to non-technical audiences. Outside of work I am a snowboarder, camper, and hiker with a deep passion for the mountains and all outdoor activities. In 2024, I joined the board of directors of the non-profit Save Our Canyons which is dedicated to protecting the Wasatch canyons located southeast of Salt Lake City. I have also been a leader in the cricket community as a founder, former president, and current member of the Utah Cricket Association, as well as a founder/member of two additional cricket teams. In addition to my experience, I earned an MBA in Technology Commercialization from Westminster College and a B.S. in Computer Science from Weber State University.

   In 2017 I was promoted and assigned to the DBaaS team focused on a critical Oracle initiative to push to the cloud, playing a key role in the creation and launch of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (leading PaaS and IaaS services) and Exadata Database Service. These efforts focused on security, rock-solid reliability, management for large and complex deployments, and the flexibility to choose the next-generation infrastructure with any class of systems - from VMs to Engineered Systems. The products launched to one region in 2017 and currently serve 50+ commercial and government regions with multicloud, hybrid cloud, dedicated cloud, and public cloud services. OCI continues to grow in popularity, with strong Gartner ratings and a growing list of marquee customers that include FedEx, TIM, Guitar Center, Cox Automotive, Specialized Bicycle, et al.Responsibilities: • Played a key role in developing efficient and automated ingestion processes for Exadata Database Service that included upstream and downstream software and process improvements.• Coordinated daily standups for new Exadata deployments.• Produced/updated runbooks for several topics and wrote documentation as guidelines for regularly occurring issues. • Provided subject matter expertise on security compliance and Exadata hardware.• Performed off-hours infrastructure patching using custom Yum repos to ensure Exadata upgrades. Drove resolution of critical customer operational issues as needed. • Hire, mentor, and train junior team members. • Implemented dynamic security Nessus scanning across all regions and availability domains. Sustained security vulnerabilities across service enclave hosts and overlay hosts.• Incorporated provisioning of service enclave hosts using upstream OCI services.• Created new host classes and permissions for new region builds.
