About Moises Lino e Silva

I am a political anthropologist probing into freedom and oppression in Brazil and into contemporary (post)colonial relations between Afro-Latin America and West Africa (Yorubaland). I derive my publications from long-term ethnographic research. On a conceptual level, I develop theories of liberation and domination to better account for the everyday situations of minoritarian groups (where minorities are understood in terms of power, not quantity). In my recent book, entitled Minoritarian Liberalism (Chicago, 2022), I argue that normative liberalism has promoted the freedom of privileged subjects, those entitled to rights—usually white, adult, heteronormative, and bourgeois—at the expense of marginalized groups, such as Black people, children, LGBTQ folks, and slum dwellers. I then explore what happens when liberalism is challenged by people whose lives are impaired by normative understandings of liberty.
